Review: Tarte Shape Tape Concealer

L-R: Light, Light Neutral, Light Medium

When you’re tired as a mother, a good concealer is your best friend, and when it comes to concealer, a good friend is hard to find. Either the color oxidizes with wear and looks unnatural, it feels too thick and heavy, or it doesn’t cover well enough. My primary area of concern is the undereye area because let’s face it (literally), that’s where most of my motherhood exhaustion hangs out.

BEFORE: only wearing foundation

Needless to say, I’ve tried a million concealers over the years, so when I heard all the hype about this new “Shape Tape” from Tarte, I had to try it.

SIDE NOTE: In the “before” photo above, I’m wearing my all-time favorite foundation which I think covers pretty well on its own considering it’s very lightweight. I wear it year-round in the shade 2.0:

I bought Shape Tape in three different colors because I had no idea which would work best with my skin tone: Light, Light Neutral, and Light Medium. I ended up going with Light Neutral because I have pink undertones but also some yellow in my skin (I tan pretty easily). Light Medium will work better in the summer if I get some color (that’s a pretty big if though), and Light was way too pale and pinkish.

The wand is huge which I thought I’d hate, but it actually provides the perfect amount for applying all over your face. If you only need a little bit, that’s kind of a problem because you’re getting a big wandful (made up word), but it goes back in the tube pretty easily even with a lot of excess product still on the applicator.

It initially has a faint scent which doesn’t bother me, and that’s unusual because I only buy fragrance free normally. I think it looks incredibly natural, and the coverage and staying-power is better than my NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer. I use the Tarte “Double-Ended Camouflage Tool” to blend it all out. I do two applications under my eyes to cover well enough which I would do with any concealer. After a few hours, it slightly settles into fine lines, but I just reblend with my fingertips.

Before and After

Conclusion: Tarte Shape Tape is not a miracle unicorn concealer, but it is better than any I’ve tried for lightweight coverage which we know is the main goal for a concealer. Still, my husband said that I look less tired without it. Sigh. What do you guys think? Let me know if you’ve tried Tarte Shape Tape or what your favorite concealer is so that I can try some others! I’ve heard good things about Urban Decay Naked Skin…(stay tuned)
