Diaper bag upgrade: How dapperbag rebooted my mom style

*I bought this bag myself and all opinions are completely my own. The giveaway is sponsored by dapperbag. All details on the giveaway are at the bottom of this post.

I didn’t start my motherhood journey with a dapperbag, but I wish that I had. My first diaper bag was large and in charge—it had two big bottle pockets protruding from each side, a big “mommy” compartment that stuck up above the rest of the bag, and a dark interior that made it difficult to find things inside. I lugged this thing around for the first two years of motherhood, always feeling like I was carrying around bricks even when there wasn’t much in the bag.

I first discovered the dapperbag brand when a blogger whom I follow featured her own bag last year. At that point, my daughter was a one-year-old, and as much as I wanted a dapperbag then, I thought to myself, You won’t need a diaper bag for much longer. Just stick it out with the one you have. I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me that as long as a child needs diapers, a parent needs a diaper bag. I guess I didn’t really grasp the fact that potty training doesn’t even begin until well into the second year of childhood for most kids—Nina just turned two and I’m only now starting to think about it. Even though I don’t load up my diaper bag quite the way I used to with outfit changes, blankets, multiple types of lotions and ointments, etc., we always have diapers, wipes, a sippy cup, snacks, and a toy or two. I thought about using one of my regular tote bags for all of this, but none of those have a built-in cup holder or a stain proof interior. I just knew I was going to ruin my other bags.

When I couldn’t take the struggle any longer, I finally purchased a Longmont bag from dapperbag. I was instantly impressed by how lightweight it felt considering that it’s made of real leather, and I was immediately obsessed with the pop-of-color turquoise interior that has a protective coating for repelling spills and stains. This feature was put to the test during the first week of use when one of Nina’s snack pouches exploded inside. All I had to do was wipe it up with paper towels (lots of them; it was a big pouch) and I cleaned it up within minutes–no scrubbing required.

Another feature that was a must-have in my new diaper bag was backpack straps. Being hands-free when we’re out and about has become a necessity. I love that this one can be worn over the shoulder AND as a backpack simply by pulling the straps out. It doesn’t have stroller clips, but that didn’t matter to me because I just hang it over the handle bar on my stroller. I also have handy stroller hooks on my stroller that I can use to hang it.

As far as organization goes, minimal is the way I roll, and this bag is right on target. The front zip compartment is where I keep my “mom essentials,” and I particularly like the phone pocket and credit card slots that sit up higher for easy reach-in access. The roomy main part of the bag has a compartment for the changing pad (included) and a zip pocket for smaller items. The two holders for bottles/sippy cups are on the inside rather than the outside, making it a bag that does not scream “MY KID RULES MY LIFE.” (We all know this is actually the case, but your bag doesn’t have to advertise that fact to the world!)

It may sound silly, but I feel like I’ve regained some elements of my former, pre-motherhood self with this bag. It meets all of my requirements for a diaper bag while still allowing me to feel unencumbered and stylish. It’s easy to lose yourself in all things baby and kid related, and as a new mom, I didn’t realize how much the balance mattered. I’m relieved to be finding it now as I gain more experience in motherhood!
